Teenager Discovered Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was found dead only a few days following being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his room at his Connah's Quay home on November 19th, 2021.
False Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a testimony presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her infant's remains had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was never taken in the first place".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains attracted online responses, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Mental Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.
Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Withdrawal and Worry
His mother said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a young adult encouraged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "heard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had communicated to the student about the accusations.
The court heard his family said they never receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Lead coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive conclusion, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his intent."
